Re: Demolition of Wooden Structures at Tema Children’s Park
A video currently circulating on social media contains unsubstantiated and malicious allegations against Tema Development Corporation (TDC) Ghana Ltd and its Managing Director, Mr. Courage Makafui Nunekpeku. The claims suggest that an unauthorized demolition occurred at the Tema Children’s Park.
The Tema Children’s Park is a vital 6.18-acre community recreational facility designed to foster social connections, promote physical and mental well-being, and support the healthy development of residents, particularly children and families. Such parks worldwide provide essential spaces for parents to bond with their children, for young people to develop social skills, teamwork, leadership, emotional stability, and mental resilience—especially through after-school programs.
Regrettably, the facility—including the only public library in the harbour city—has deteriorated over time and become a haven for miscreants and squatters. Unauthorized wooden structures and shacks have been erected, undermining the park’s original purpose as a public recreational space.
The circulating video features a 72-year-old man falsely claiming that Mr. Nunekpeku personally demolished his home while sparing structures belonging to NPP sympathizers. These accusations are baseless propaganda, lacking any credible evidence, and appear designed to tarnish the reputation of the hardworking Managing Director. They also wrongly suggest that Mr. Nunekpeku disregarded input from the Member of Parliament for Tema West, Hon. James Enu Esq., and the Tema West Municipal Assembly, including Hon. Ludwig Teye. Such claims are malicious, divisive, and intended to sow discord among stakeholders who enjoy cordial relations.
Several months ago, Mr. Nunekpeku, accompanied by community opinion leaders, toured the Children’s Park. It was collectively agreed that all unauthorized wooden structures should be removed to restore and preserve the facility for its intended public recreational use.
For those claiming that the 72 year oldman is a strong NDC man ,we thought it would have been prudent for those speaking as if they loved the man should have rented a decent and serene home for him instead given him money to erect a wooden structure on a public facility. This is shameful to say the least.
As a well recognized group we are aware of the selfish individuals who are behind this smeared campaign against the hardworking and energetic MD of TDC.
Attached evidence clearly demonstrates that the demolished structures were not legitimate homes but unauthorized encroachments. Attempts by certain individuals to exploit this situation for personal or parochial interests, in order to attack Mr. Nunekpeku’s character, have failed. As always, such ill-intentioned agendas are exposed.
The Concerned Youth of Tema stand firmly with the Managing Director and TDC in their efforts to safeguard public assets and redevelop community facilities for the benefit of all residents.
