Two brothers, Emmanuel Ghartey, 25, a chainsaw operator and Bernard Ghartey, 23, a commercial tricycle operator were imprisoned for stealing the car battery of an accident vehicle at Agona Kwaman.

In an interview with Crime Check, they said they were part of a group of youth mobilized from the community to visit the accident scene to rescue the driver of the truck who unfortunately lost his life.

Three days later, the siblings said ignorantly, thinking the car had been abandoned as scraps, they went back to the site of the accident and removed the vehicle's battery which had been damaged.

Upon a tip off, the elders of Agona Kwaman asked some volunteers to keep an eye on the duo after hearing about their intention.

The Ghartey brothers said they also got wind of them being followed so they abandoned their intentions and returned to Agona Kwaman.

The elders of the town then reported them to the police. During interrogation the brothers admitted removing the battery.

Despite the car owner's request to let them go, they said they were still arrested and subsequently arraigned before court where they were sentenced to six months each after defaulting the payment of fines of GHC 1,500 each.

After spending a month and eleven days in prison, Crime Check Foundation with support from a group donor, Ghana Unity Club went to their rescue to pay their fines for their release.

Taking an item from an accident vehicle without authorization is theft!

Beware!
